I wanna be a…*giggle*…never mind

I was rummaging through my backpack this week. I hadn’t used it in over a year – not since I stuffed it full of granola bars last spring and went off on a random adventure.  Anyway, I got to the bottom of the pack and realized there was a sheet of paper there. It was titled “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I couldn’t believe it.

Funny thing is, this was a series of lessons that we went over in our  Sunday School class at the very beginning of 2009 – we talked about what we loved to do, what we wanted  in our lives, and what steps we needed to take. And apparently I actually took this lesson seriously instead of writing down things like “I wanna be a belly-dancer!” or “I wanna be Tyler Perry’s next stalker!!” Shocking, I know.

Why was I so fascinated by this? This was what I had written months before I quit my full-time job – before I ever shook hands and introduced myself to Harrison House Publishers. Before I knew how any of it could come about. It was amazing to me how much had changed in A YEAR AND A HALF! Here were some of my answers (Click on pictures for larger view):

It’s interesting to look at. I didn’t know how I would get to those goals. It’s a little different that I pictured – I’m growing residual income with the book. I’m giving speeches, but not in the way I thought. But then again – how could I have pictured then the doors that would open?

Here is what I picked up from this, and here is why I think we should start writing more dreams and goals down:

  • It not only gives us a guide to go by, but it also helps us realize when we accomplish something. So many times we (achievement-oriented/perfectionists) go from one project to the next without ever acknowledging how far we have come. Without ever giving ourselves a break. The minute we hit a goal we say, “Okay then, that was great – what’s next?” Take some time out – realize that you did something crazy/brave you said you wanted to do. Be proud of yourself. Look back at this past year – What personal battles have you had the courage to even begin fighting?
  • Looking back at the list gives me courage to dream for something even bigger. If all of that could happen in a year and a half, what could happen in the next two? I don’t know, but I want to shoot for something BIG. As my friends said last night, if you can figure out all of the details to how your dreams can happen, you’re dreaming too small. 🙂

So I’m starting my new list tonight. I might share it soon. I’d love to hear some of the things on your list as well!

True that! as my girls would say. When I grow up I want several income streams(so I don’t have to go to a regular job but only work at what I love!), I want to travel, I want to speak and impact lives, I want to write (finish) books…I want to do those things that I find fun and exciting even though some might consider them work!!! Kinda you are amazing and I need to spend more time with you!
